AI in the Economy

Artificial Intelligence has been something society has talked and wondered about for the past few decades, but it never really came into the picture as an imminent threat or help in society. There have been dramatized movies about how AI can take over our world, and was always seen as this futuristic, dystopian-like world that is too far away to truly focus on. However, in the recent years since the pandemic, it has now truly come to the center of attention because of some of the advancements and capabilities we’ve seen. So much so that regulations and policies are actively being put in place to monitor it. It went from something we thought would never actually become a huge problem or benefit, to it actually becoming a way to change the world completely.

In our capitalist society, something like AI can greatly impact our ability to operate economically. It can help companies speed up processes and make efficiency at another level. You might think, “Wow! This is such a helpful tool for our future and our economy!” But…. not so fast. There can be many disadvantages and huge impacts in the workforce, especially at a personal level. What will AI do to our jobs? Are we going to lose so many jobs because of how much more efficient AI can be? Or is it more efficient? There are so many lurking questions as to how AI will truly be integrated into our economic world, and some of the potential consequences seem to be something of concern.

Artificial Intelligence is going to be moving forward and becoming much more involved in our world, whether we like it or not. One of the most popular aspects of AI has been the creation of ChatGPT, which is a chatbot with millions of pieces of data, which can answer almost any complex question in a matter of seconds. We see people using it for coding, schoolwork, copywriting, and even just simple questions we might not know the specific answer to. Whatever it is, ChatGPT more than likely has the answer.

How worried should we be? Different researchers have found that almost 47% of employment could be at risk of losing its job because of automation. This is very specific in any kind of service industry job, which is also where we've seen the most growth. But at the same time, many beliefs are that the improvement in economic output from AI will also increase the job market. But do we trust these big-time CEO’s who only care about profit? It seems people will do anything to increase their profits, regardless of its impact on the workers.

All we can do is wait. AI’s development is increasing at a much faster rate than we’ve seen, and the results will start showing. As the people, we need to hold the elites in power accountable in taking ethical and moral routes when using AI. Everyone deserves the ability to work and have a livelihood, and we shouldn’t let robots take our work. While the benefits can be positive and potentially life-changing, we have to think about the other negative effects, which also can be life-changing. The perfect balance between the two is going to be the key in continuing a fair and successful life for all in our society.
